Absences may be excused for the following reasons:
- Disaster – Natural or local disasters, such as fire, earthquake or pandemic flu.
- Medical appointments – Includes medical, dental, optometric or chiropractic services.
- Illness
- Justifiable personal reasons – As defined by board policy and Education Code 48205, including but not limited to:
- Court appearances.
- Funeral services (one excused day for services in California; three excused days for services outside California).
- Observance of a religious holiday or ceremony.
- Attendance at a religious retreat.
- Attendance at an employment or educational conference on the legislative or judicial process, offered by a nonprofit organization.
- A hardship situation affecting the pupil or family, as authorized by the principal.
For conferences, a parent or guardian must request the absence in writing, and the principal or a designated representative must approve it in accordance with district policy.
